Otilia (Anamaria Marinca) and Gabita (Laura Vasiliu) are two friends from university in Romania. It is 1987 in Communist Romania, in the final years of the Nicolae Ceausescu era. Ceausescu, a member of the Communist power, became power-hungry and appointed himself leader of Romania, gaining control over nearly every aspect of social life. He quashed much of Romania’s freedom under a Communist regime. One of the laws he overturned was the right for a woman to obtain an abortion. Gabita becomes pregnant, and turns to her roommate in the dorm, Otilia to help her. Since abortion is illegal, the two girls arrange a meeting with a man named Mr. Bebe (Vlad Ivanov) in a hotel. There, it is planned that he will perform an illegal abortion.
