During World War II, the Japanese occupied China, and Wong Chia Chi (Wei Tang) was a shy and lonely freshman at university. There she met Kuang Yu Min (Lee-Hom Wang), who encouraged her to join his drama society, a group he created to shore up patriotism. Wong finds a voice as the leading lady of the troupe, able to move and inspire audiences. Kuang constructs a plan to assassinate Mr. Yee (Tony Leung Chiu Wai), the head of a collaborationist secret service and a key part of the puppet government. The plan is to have Wong pretend to be Mrs. Mak, gain the trust of first Mrs. Yee, and then Mr. Yee, and drag him into a tawdry affair. Unfortunately, he is not the only one drawn into the affair, and Wong has to make decisions about lust, caution, her identity, and her loyalty.
