Alice (Ellen Burstyn ) does everything for her husband and son. She also relies on him to take care of the finances. So, when he unexpectedly dies in a trucking accident, she is ill-prepared to take care of everything. To make matters worse, her husband left her with no insurance. With no one to turn to, Alice makes the decision to sell everything, take her son, Tommy (Alfred Lutter III ) and move west. When she runs out of money, she settles herself and Tommy into a small town and begins a waitress job at Mel’s Diner. Soon, Mel, (Vic Tavback), Flo, (Diane Ladd) and Vera (Valerie Curtin) adopt Alice as one of them. They help her with the big transition of being a widow and single parent and counsel her when her new romantic interest, David (Kris Kristofferson).
